Ionian Prosopography 19th - 20th century

Research team: Katerina Bregianni
Beginning of project: 1997

The aim of the project is to assemble structured and searchable information on persons who match the following criteria:

- persons with public action- political, artistic, scientific, intellectual, or social,

- persons of Eptanesian, i.e. Ionian origin, who either lived in the Ionian Islands or on the Greek mainland, or were members the Ottoman Greek community, or expatriots.

A person is considered to be of Ionian origin provided the birthplace of at least one of his parents is in the Ionian Islands.

The chronological criterion for the inclusion of a person in the prosopography is the year of his death. The starting point of the project is the year 1800 and its limit is determined by the 30-year restriction that applies to access to public archives.

At present, over 6000 persons and a total of 1000 bibliographic sources have been entered in the database.

The database, which is hosted on a server at the Centre, is intended for use by scholars for research and educational purposes and will eventually be accessible on the internet.

After an initial trial period, the present platform on which the program is running was completed in November 2004. Future plans include a major upgrade to meet international standards.
