Publication of Vol. 1 of the Historical Dictionary of the Cappadocian Dialect

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with great pleasure and emotion that we announce the publication of Vol. 1 of the Historical Dictionary of the Cappadocian Dialect, Athens: Academy of Athens, 2024, printed by National Printing House. The Historical Dictionary of the Cappadocian Dialect (Ιστορικό Λεξικό των Ιδιωμάτων της Καππαδοκίας, ILIK), edited by I. Manolessou, Director of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects, and compiled by the researchers of the Centre: I. Manolessou, G. Katsouda, S. Tsolakidis, G. Chairetakis and the post-doc researcher Ch. Papanagiotou will be completed in 3 volumes. It is the result of a research project funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) and was implemented from 2018 to 2022 by the Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects of the University of Patras, with the support of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects of the Academy of Athens (Digitizing the Cappadocian Dialectal Landscape - DiCaDLand, http://cappadocian.upatras.gr/el ), with D. Melissaropoulou (AUTh) as scientific supervisor.

The aim of the ILIK is to provide the most complete lexicographical documentation of the Cappadocian dialect, joining the series of major dialectal dictionaries of the Academy of Athens, i.e. the Historical Dictionary of the Greek Dialects of Southern Italy (Karanastasis 1984-1992), the Dictionary of the Tsakonian Dialect (Kostakis 1986-1987) and of course the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek (ILNE, 1933-).

The written sources of the ILIK consist of all the published literature on Cappadocian (descriptions of varieties, glossaries, of narratives, folksongs etc.) as well as from the manuscript collections of dialectal material deposited in the Archives of the Academy of Athens and the Centre for Asia Minor Studies. Thus, the ILIK contains a large amount of old linguistic data from unpublished manuscript sources, which was unknown and inaccessible to the scientific community until now. At the same time, ILIK also makes use of a large volume of transcribed recent oral dialectal recordings of 3rd generation refugee speakers, which were kindly provided to the Dicadland project by earlier research projects of Greek and foreign scholars.

The ILIK will soon be available in electronic form from the website of the Academy of Athens, and will be accompanied by the forthcoming 5-volume Linguistic Atlas of the dialectal varieties of Cappadocia, in print and electronic form (http://cappadocian.upatras.gr/atlas/el ).

It was the wish of the contributors of the project that it would serve as a memorial for the 100 years since the end of the historical presence of the Cappadocian dialectal varieties in their homeland.

It contains 8 commissioned meta-lexicographic studies by researchers of the Research Centre of Modern Greek Dialects, which treat basic theoretical and methodological aspects of lexicography (phonetic transcription, etymology, senses, examples, sources etc.), and present, comment and interpret the position of the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek (ILNE) with respect to them, on the occasion of the revision of its Manual of Regulations, published separately as an annex.
