Το Κέντρον Ερεύνης της Ελληνικής και Λατινικής Γραμματείας της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, στο πλαίσιο του μηνιαίου σεμιναρίου του (Self-Praise & Self-Blame in Ancient Literature), σας προσκαλεί στη διάλεξη του Tim Whitmarsh (A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture, University of Cambridge):

Odysseus the ἀλαζών: The Perils of First-Person Narration in Roman Greek Literature

Πέμπτη, 22 Απριλίου, 5-7μμ

Abstract

Odysseus is associated throughout classical antiquity with boastfulness, and the stories he tells Alcinous’ court are often viewed as self-serving tall tales. This well-known phenomenon is usually associated with ancient ideas of poetic fiction and rhetoric. But there is much more to it than this: in this paper, I argue that Odysseus’ ‘bragging’ can be understood as a reflection of a set of distinctively Greek conceptions of authorship itself, and helps us to define more precisely how the idea of the author was construed in classical antiquity.
